Low carbon steel specific properties

Sep 10, 2021

Mild steel is the cheapest of all steels and the most commonly used. Mild steel is used in almost all products made of steel, it is weldable, it is very hard, and although prone to rusting, it is very durable. Mild steel with less than 2% carbon can be magnetized and used in most projects that require large amounts of metal. The structural strength of mild steel precludes its use in the manufacture of load-bearing and structural beams.

Low carbon steel

Mild steel, also known as plain carbon steel, is the most common form of steel because of its relatively low price while offering material properties that are acceptable for many applications. Mild steel has a carbon content of about 0.05–0.15%, and mild steel has a carbon content of about 0.16–0.29%, making it ductile and ductile, but not hardening by heat treatment. Mild steel has relatively low tensile strength, but is inexpensive and ductile, and surface hardness can be increased by carburizing.

It is usually used when large quantities of steel are required, for example as structural steel. Mild steel has a density of approximately 7.85 g/cm3 (7850 kg/m3 or 0.284 lb/in3) and a Young's modulus of 210 GPa (30,000,000 psi).

Mild steel suffers from yield point jump when the material has two yield points. The first yield point (or upper yield point) is higher than the second yield point, after which the yield drops sharply. If mild steel is stressed only at a point between the upper and lower yield points, Lüder bands may form on the surface. Mild steels contain less carbon than other steels and are easier to cold form, making them easier to handle.

Chemical composition of mild steel

Mild steel is a carbon steel that usually contains up to 0.25% carbon and 0.4%-0.7% manganese, 0.1%-0.5% silicon and some + traces of other elements such as phosphorus, it may also contain lead ( free cutting mild steel) or sulfur (also free cutting steel is called revulcanized mild steel).
